As an international student or exchange visitor, you are required by immigration law and regulations to maintain your legal status in the United States.  If you fail to maintain your status, you automatically lose this status and are likely to find yourself illegally present in the US.  To meet the requirement, you must:

1. Keep your PASSPORT valid at all times.
For information on how to renew your passport, please contact your country's embassy at  these web sites:
Embassy web sites:
The Embassy Page: http://www.embpage.org/
The Electronic Embassy: http://www.embassy.org/
2. You must register full-time as a student during the academic year.
Full-time means that as an undergraduate, you must register and complete at least four courses each semester; as a graduate student, the full-time course load is defined by your school or department. There are some exceptions to this regulation such as your medical condition may not allow you to maintain your full-time course load or in your last semester, you may not need four courses to finish your degree. In either of these events, please talk to the OISS staff if you have some exceptional reasons.
3. An exchange visitor scholar must engage in the activity described on his or her DS-2019 form

4. Apply for EXTENSIONS OF STAY 30 days before the date on your I-20 or DS-2019 expires.
Please check your I-20 student copy item #5, and DS-2019 item #3 for J-1 students and scholars. You need to extend your program before it expires.
5. Do not accept off-campus EMPLOYMENT without official permission.

In sum, you should always register full-time and have valid immigration documents. Don't be hesitant to contact us if you are not certain about your status and documents.
