All J-1 Exchange Visitors and their J-2 dependents are required by the federal regulations that govern the Exchange Visitor Program to have medical insurance for the entire period of their stay in the United States.  The Exchange Visitor regulations specify a minimum level of coverage.
  • Medical benefits of at least $50,000 per accident or illness
  • Repatriation of remains in the amount of $7500
  • Expenses associated with medical evacuation of the Exchange Visitor to his or her home country in the amount of $10,000
  • A deductible not to exceed $500 per accident or illness.

Any insurance policy obtained must meet the requirements listed above and must have an approval rating that is accepted by the Exchange Visitor Program.  Please refer to the State Department website for more detailed information.

National health insurance coverage backed by the full faith and credit of the government of the Exchange Visitor's home country shall be deemed to meet the requirement, but we strongly recommend that confirmation is obtained for coverage while in the US.

The medical and hospitalization coverage provided by the Yale Health Plan exceeds these requirements.

An Exchange Visitor who willfully fails to maintain the insurance coverage as set forth or who makes a material misrepresentation to the sponsor regarding the coverage will be considered to be in violation of the USIA regulations and will be subject to termination as an Exchange Visitor participant.

It is the J-1 Exchange Visitor's responsibility, not Yale's, to obtain and maintain insurance coverage. All Exchange Visitors will sign a statement that they understand and intend to comply with the medical insurance requirement as part of their check-in process at the OISS.
