The spouses – wives or husbands – and dependent children of international students and scholars who at Yale are often faced with an experience quite different from their student or scholar spouse. The spouse who is studying or working is usually quite busy and away from the home all day. This can be a lonely, isolating experience for the accompanying spouse and can be a difficult situation for everyone. The situation however can be improved if the spouse is able to participate in activities on his or her own. There are a number of things that are possible in New Haven, even if you are not able to work. Dwight Hall at Yale can offer suggestions for volunteer activities in a social service agency in New Haven. If you have school age children, you may ask about volunteering in your child’s classroom or in the school library. If you have questions about what you can do at Yale and in New Haven, please feel free to ask the OISS staff.
