In many U.S. families both parents are working outside of the home. It is not uncommon for children as young as six weeks to taken care of by some one other than the parents. Families most commonly used babysitters or take their children to daycare centers or pre-school programs. The decision about who will take care of your children is obviously one of the most important decisions you will make. You will find useful information in an article, written by Dr. Nancy Close of the Yale Child Study Center, entitled "Choosing a Day Care Center or Nursery School for Your Child: How to Assess Quality and Match Programs to Your Child’s Developmental Needs." This article and a short list of day care programs in the vicinity of Yale can be found at www.yale.edu/daycare. This website also has information about other resources for children. You can pick up a printed copy of the Child Care Directory which lists many day care and preschool options at OISS, the Human Resources Office at 155 Whitney or by getting in touch with Susan Abramson, the administrative coordinator of Yale’s Early Childhood Education Program. (Tel. 203-785-2513 or by email at susan.abramson@yale.edu.
